Why would someone consider counselling?

There are many reasons people choose to get input from an outsider during times of challenge in their life. Here are some of the most common:

  • to get an objective point of view
  • to increase understanding of a situation by gaining information and resources
  • to have a safe place to vent frustration and upset
  • to regain a sense of direction and purpose
  • to learn to manage difficult emotions
  • to increase coping strategies
  • to get guidance through a life transition when issues feel too intimate to discuss with family and friends
  • to increase an overall sense of personal growth

Cheryl’s primary focus…

Cheryl’s primary focus as a counselor is to help you find meaning and understanding in your current life situation and to assist in maximizing your coping strategies. She uses a generalists’ approach to therapy and employs a great deal of flexibility in her model, as she recognizes that each individual comes with a unique life story and unique life circumstance that must be considered before an approach is considered. That being said, her many years of experience in the field of loss have certainly shaped her belief system when it comes to facing the many challenges we are each presented with in life.

Despite enjoying long-time relationships with many clients who check in with her off and on through the years as part of their overall wellness management, she prefers to steer away from long term counseling. She wants you to improve your own coping strategies and feel confident enough to manage your life situation as quickly as possible. That being said, Cheryl will never rush you through a process. Her sessions are generally an hour and a half long because she has realized over the years that it takes that long to work through an issue with a sense of completeness and clarity. She will see you for as many sessions as may be needed to reach your goal, but is also cost conscious; and will work with you to determine the best plan of action with respect to your needs and to book appointments in a way that will allow you to maximize the time between sessions. If you feel you could benefit from counseling, contact Cheryl today.
